Lake Urungach

Among the many legends about the nature of Uzbekistan, Lake Urungach holds a special place. Hidden high in the mountains of the Bostanlyk district, this remarkable природное wonder is often called the “Jade Lake” because of its extraordinary turquoise-emerald water, shimmering like light jade. Surrounded by alpine meadows, snow-capped peaks, and crystal-clear mountain air, visitors truly feel a deep harmony with nature here.

Lake Urungach is actually a system of two lakes — the Upper and the Lower — located at an altitude of about 1,500 meters above sea level within the Ugam-Chatkal National Park. The lake was formed centuries ago as a result of a natural landslide that blocked the river. Because of this origin, the water is exceptionally clear: on a bright day, the bottom can be seen at a depth of up to ten meters. Even in the hottest summer days, the water remains icy cold — only 3–5°C — giving the place a sense of untouched, powerful wilderness.

Reaching the lake is not easy: it requires about 160 kilometers of driving from Tashkent followed by a mountain hike of around one and a half hours. Yet every step of the journey is rewarded the moment the smooth jade surface appears before your eyes, reflecting the sky and surrounding cliffs. The view is breathtaking and makes you forget the noise and rush of everyday life.

Lake Urungach is not only a beautiful natural site but also a fragile treasure that needs protection. Preserving its purity depends on every visitor. More and more hikers now return from their trips not only with unforgettable memories but also with a sense of responsibility for nature. We hope that this jade gem will remain pristine and majestic for future generations to admire.
